In celebration of its centenary VENINI presents “GIULIO PAOLINI – La Musa in laguna” at Galleria Christian Stein in Milan.
VENINI commissioned from the italian artist two limited editions entitled “I colori della Musa, 2021” and “Planetario, 2021”, which can be seen here for the first time, together with a series of studies on paper made by the artist on the same subject.
I Colori della Musa, 2021
Relief in plaster, Murano glass – 50 x 40 x 4 cm – Signed, titled, dated, and numbered on verso – 6 pieces bearing Arabic numerals, 3 artist’s proofs and 2 production proofs – The artist has made each piece unique and original – Vetreria Venini, Murano-Venice
An oval relief in plaster, neoclassical in style, proposes a female figure in profile, intent on making a drawing. Fragments of Murano glass are inserted in various points of the reliefs, different in shape, colour and size in each one. The female profile recalls the mythological figure of the Muse, the embodiment of the supreme ideal of Art, here intent on painting, scattering touches of colour around herself. In the artist’s own words: “Various multicoloured fragments revolve around the female figure who observes them and holds them in place in the images we see. It is the Muse who proffers them to us in the oval frame accommodating them; the fragments are derived from Édouard Manet’s palette, also oval, which had aroused Eugène Delacroix’s wonder when he saw it.” The series title recalls the painter’s palette and celebrates the beauty of colours.
Planetario, 2021
Relief in plaster, Murano glass – 50 x 40 x 4 cm – Signed, titled, dated, and numbered on verso – 6 pieces bearing Arabic numerals, 3 artist’s proofs and 2 production proofs – The artist has made each piece unique and original -Vetreria Venini, Murano-Venice
An oval relief in plaster, neoclassical in style, proposes a female figure in profile, intent on looking at herself in the mirror she holds up before herself. Rounds of Murano glass – different in size and colour from one piece to another – are inserted in various points of the reliefs, arranged to seem held in place by different points of the female figure. The position of the element associated with the right hand, corresponding to the mirror, remains constant among the various pieces. The female silhouette recalls the mythological figure of the Muse, embodiment of the supreme ideal of Art, while the circles that the figure has rotating around itself evoke the planets in the solar system, for Paolini the symbol of an absolute dimension.
